Meet Viv Who’s On A Financial Roller Coaster
I want to introduce you to someone else I've been writing for and about for years: Vivian.
Viv started her wellness practice three years ago, and she's doing everything an entrepreneur is supposed to do: she goes to networking events, she sends regular emails to her list, she posts on social media... But somehow it doesn’t feel like it’s enough.
The feast and famine cycle
Viv's revenue moves in waves. Some months she's fully booked and other months her calendar is sparse, and she watches her savings shrink while she waits for the next bump in revenue. She never knows when that will be so she can’t really plan much in advance like vacation. She certainly can’t afford to have any crisis take her away from work. This uncertainty follows her into everything she does in her business.
Doing everything right
She has clients, but not the clients she'd choose if she had the room to be picky. There isn't enough interest in her offers yet for her to turn anyone away, so she says yes to people she probably shouldn't, just to keep some income coming in. Referrals trickle in from her small circle, but her reach barely extends past the people who already know her.
So Viv does what she's told will fix this. She engages a consultant to build her a beautiful website and a sophisticated funnel. She buys lifetime access to a course platform so she can host courses, even though she hasn’t got any yet. She hires a content expert to post across four platforms every single day.
Exhaustion is creeping in
Gradually, Viv can feel that none of this is building anything real: no trust, no relationship, nothing that would make a stranger choose her over someone else in her field. She keeps going anyway, because stopping feels riskier than continuing, and she's not sure yet what else there is to do.
Viv in the novel
I've been writing the story of Viv, alongside Dan's, in the novel I mentioned last week.
In the novel, something starts to shift for Viv too. She texts a handful of former clients with one simple question, and their answers bring her clarity. She stops treating this one thing she does regularly as an afterthought and builds it into the center of her work instead. She realizes two sides of her life have been one all along, pulling her to her work. And somewhere in the middle of all that, the roller coaster flattens and stress makes way for flow.
